Kurdistan Region President’s letter to UN Secretary General and Security Council

In a formal letter addressed to the United Nation’s Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres, and members of the UN Security Council, the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani urges the international community to grant the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) additional powers to mediate between Iraq’s Federal Government and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in the disputes over pending issues, including the implementation of the Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, oil related disagreements and national revenues.

President Nechirvan Barzani also lends support to the Iraqi Federal Government’s earlier request of the UN Security Council to expand the United Nations’ authorities in Iraq in order to monitor the upcoming general elections in the country set for October this year, and to ensure free and fair elections.

The President urges the UN Security Council to formally support the implementation of the recent agreement between the Federal Government and the KRG on budgetary issues, the ongoing negotiations on all pending disagreements, and to include the support in the Security Council Resolution on extending the UNAMI mandate beyond May 2021.

The President also urges the United Nations to grant UNAMI additional authority to provide more humanitarian assistance to the refugees and the internally displaced people hosted in camps in the Kurdistan Region.
