The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit has confirmed that at 00:28 on Monday (17 August 2026), Iran launched two explosives-laden Hadid-110 drones across the border, targeting the prime minister’s private office (at KRG headquarters) and the home of the head of the KRG Security and Intelligence Agency (in Pirmam District, Erbil Governorate).
Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Later the same day, Masrour Barzani, the KRG prime minister, published this statement on his X account:
“Following an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit, my personal office and the home of the head of the Security and Intelligence Agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks earlier today.
I condemn these reckless and unacceptable attacks in the strongest terms. This is a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.
These attacks will not deter us from carrying out our duties and protecting our citizens.”
President Nechirvan Barzani also released a statement on August 17, 2026.
“We strongly condemn the attacks that targeted the office of Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, and the residence of the Head of the Security and Intelligence Agency. These attacks are unacceptable and constitute a dangerous escalation.”
“We call on the Federal Government to fulfill its responsibilities and constitutional obligations to safeguard the security and stability of the country and to prevent the recurrence of such acts of aggression.”
“Safeguarding the sovereignty, security, and stability of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, is a shared responsibility, and all parties must collaborate to ease tensions and prevent further escalation.”
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received a telephone call from Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi. In the call, the federal Prime Minister condemned the drone attacks on Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s office and the residence of the head of the Parastin Agency. He stressed that these attacks on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are unacceptable.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani thanked the federal Prime Minister for his call and stressed the importance of protecting the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
