Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received a phone call from British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday.
During the phone conversation, Prime Minister May expressed her country’s support to the Kurdistan Regional Government and the rights of the people of the Kurdistan Region under the Iraqi Constitution.
Prime Minister May stressed the importance of restarting dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve all outstanding issues, including the joint management of border crossings. She expressed her support for the democratic process in the Kurdistan Region and highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom in the field of counter-terrorism. She also hoped that international flights resume to the Kurdistan Region’s airports soon.
The British leader invited Prime Minister Barzani to visit London for further talks.
Prime Minister Barzani thanked Prime Minister May for the phone call and briefed her on the situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, including issues related to the federal budget, financial state, and the need protect constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region. As for border crossings and airports, he said that his government is ready to cooperate and coordinate with the federal authorities in Baghdad on the basis of the Iraqi Constitution.
